The Nigerian government recently unveiled a roster comprising no less than 37 unauthorized universities currently operating within the country.
In an interview on Channels Television, Chris Maiyaki, the Acting Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), disclosed this information. Maiyaki highlighted the collaborative efforts with law enforcement resulting in several arrests.
Emphasizing the involvement of the Department of State Services in cracking down on these illegitimate institutions, Maiyaki urged vigilance among parents. He advised them to regularly check the NUC website for a comprehensive list of accredited universities in Nigeria. This proactive measure aims to safeguard students from falling prey to fraudulent educational endeavors.
This action by the NUC follows the suspension of degree certificates issued by universities in two Francophone West African nations. A journalist’s undercover report unveiled the expedited acquisition of a degree from a Benin Republic-based university, leading to deployment in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) within a remarkably brief period.

Consequently, the federal government placed 18 universities in Benin Republic and Togo on a blacklist.
Moreover, the government signaled its intent to broaden the scope of sanctions, hinting at extending punitive measures to universities in Uganda, Kenya, Niger Republic, and other African nations.
